Capsule Summary
The Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto is a patchwork created by threading together performances by several different pianists. The opening 53 seconds of the first movement are played by Dimitris Sgouros. Bernd Glemser then plays until 4:06. At that point, Martha Argerich’s recording with Claudio Abbado is used for a short 17-second orchestral transition. Glemser then returns until 18:20, after which Evgeny Kissin concludes the movement.
The second movement begins with Bernd Glemser for 47 seconds. Evgeny Kissin then plays until 4:08. Glemser returns until 6:08, after which Kissin returns until 6:45. Martha Argerich then finishes off the movement.
The third movement begins with Bernd Glemser until 4:37. Martha Argerich’s recording is then used for an orchestral passage that lasts until 5:21. Glemser then takes over until 5:39, after which Joseph Banowetz concludes the work.
The Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 4 is also heavily edited, alternating between Angela Brownridge and Jean-Philippe Collard in the first movement, and between Angela Brownridge and Stephen Hough in the second movement. This recording also appears on Saint-Saëns Concertos, the only difference being that the final part of the second movement is sped up there. The Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 remains unidentified.
The same “Hatto” performance of the Tchaikovsky Concerto also appears on CACD 9195. The Saint-Saëns Concerto appears on Hatto’s Saint-Saëns CD.
