Capsule Summary

There are three known issues of this CD (2003, 2005, and 2006). The 2003 edition uses John O’Conor’s Telarc performances for the Op. 49 Sonatas but substitutes unidentified sources for the Appassionata. The 2005 edition reverses this pattern — O’Conor is used for the Appassionata, while the Op. 49 Sonatas are replaced by unidentified performances. The Waldstein Sonata on the 2003 issue is a patchwork: O’Conor’s recording supplies measures 102–399 of the finale, while the opening 101 and final 144 measures come from one or more unidentified sources. The 2005 issue restores O’Conor for the complete work, though minor time-stretching is applied to some movements. The 2006 release improves the sound quality and has slight changes in track placement, but is identical to the 2005 release in all other aspects.
